“I loved a German”, published in 1935, is one of the best known novels by the Estonian classical author A. H. Tammsaare. A young Estonian man and a young German lady – Oskar and Erica – fall in love with each other. Although they believe that their love overcomes all obstacles, and despite the fact that everyone is now equal in the young Estonian Republic, their tender feelings collide with the country’s historical past and the social prejudice. Unfortunately the German families, deprived of their former noble status, have preserved the bitterness in connection with the nationalisation of their estates, and the Estonians’ centuries-long hatred and admiration for the Germans has not left Oskar unaffected. “I loved a German” is at the same time poetic, sad and passionate story, one of the few in the Estonian literature to present the events also from the Baltic German perspective.
